    I'm confused ???
The external wifi antenna doesn't work, but you want to plug it in to see if it works???

Well it will definitely not hurt to plug it in.

But try to clean the contacts first with alcohol and a piece of paper towel. or even rough up the contacts a little bit (scratch with a small knife or screwdriver).
Sometimes these appear to stop working but it is just because the contacts have tarnished.

Specs on the 254 indicate the STB requires 12 VDC and consumes 10 watts (Typically).
The specs for the Power Supply Adapter is 12 VDC @ 1 Amp. (~ 12 watts).

Plugging in a USB Wifi antenna will add to the load overall.
Your best bet would be to get a quality AC Adapter that can supply a minimum of 1.5 Amps (@12 VDC)

Electrical Engineering "Best Practices" recommends for power supply design/ specification, that maximum power draw (Wattage), from a device, should not exceed 64% of the rated nominal capacity of the Power Supply.

Therefore, Mag Specs indicate ~85% loading requirement from the adapter, and since theses adapters are usually of low quality, as the components age, AC noise will increase and ability of the adapter to deliver rated capabilities, will decrease.
          * This does not take into account the added load of the wifi transmitter/ receiver.

Upgrade to a new STB or Get a new AC adapter (and possibly a new antenna)
